Vaginal Contraceptive Spermicidal Agents

The vaginal spermicidal agents work in two different ways to prevent pregnancy. Their insertion in the vagina before intercourse produces a barrier to sperm penetration of the cervical os (opening to the uterus), and the active ingredients are directly toxic to sperm.

Vaginal Contraceptive Spermicidal Agents

All spermicidal agents contain the active ingredient nonoxynol 9, which immobilizes and kills sperm on contact. Women may use a spermicidal foam, cream or suppository as the sole agent for contraception; although it is recommend using a barrier method along with a spermicidal agent. When the vaginal spermicidal agents are use alone they have a failure rate of 21 pregnancies per 100 women per year compared to condoms that have a failure rate of 12 pregnancies per 100 women per year.

The spermicidal agents should be inserted deep into the vagina, close to the cervix, before each act of intercourse. The agents should be placed in the vagina 10-30 minutes before sex. Be sure to read and follow the included instructions supplied with each of the different products for specific instructions.

For the best protections against pregnancy, use a spermicidal agent and a form physical barrier method, such as a condom, diaphragm, sponge, or cervical cap.
