Before you go into labor, before you can get pregnant, before you can even think to conceive, you must prepare your body to carry a healthy baby. Even though preparing your body for pregnancy is easy, it is a step many women forget to take. If you want to get pregnant however, it is important you prepare for pregnancy weeks before you start trying to conceive.

You can begin preparing your mind for pregnancy by keeping track of your pregnancy week by week. We'll help teach you the important information you need to know about becoming pregnant and about caring for your body and your baby's body during your pregnancy.

Planning to Get Pregnant - Pregnancy Week 1
To prepare for pregnancy, you should first make sure you are ready to welcome a newborn baby into your home. Make sure you've spent some one-on-one time with your partner talking about having a newborn baby. You should talk about the ways a new baby will change your life. A newborn baby needs to have round the clock care and you need to make sure you and your partner are up to the task.

If you and your partner are positive you want to conceive, or add to your family, then the next step you should take is scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider. An OB/GYN or other qualified healthcare provider will review your health history, conduct a Pap examination to ensure you are healthy, and may draw blood to have a CBC (a comprehensive blood test) on the record.

Your doctor will encourage you to start taking at least 800 mg of folic acid each day. Folic acid is important even before you get pregnant, because without it, your baby may be born with a neural tube defect.

Your doctor or other healthcare provider may also encourage you to take a multivitamin. Folic acid is important even before you get pregnant, because it can prevent birth defects.

Here are some other steps you can take to help prepare your body for pregnancy:

  • Avoid drinking alcohol, which can impair your fertility, or cause serious birth defects if you do become pregnant.

  • Stay away from tobacco smoke, which can also harm a developing fetus. If you are a smoker, you should work with your doctor to quit smoking before you become pregnant.

  • Eat healthy meals, including many whole grains, vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. You will get many of the nutrients you need to carry a baby from the foods you eat.

  • Rest and relax, and spend some time meditating on your family. A healthy mind and spirit are just as important as a healthy body for maintaining a baby.

The Best Times to Try for Baby
Many couples want to know when the best time is to have a baby. The answer is there is no perfect or best time. Any time is a good time as long as you prepare your body and your home for your baby. You want to make sure you and your partner are happy. Many couples say they want to "wait" until they are more financially secure to have a baby. You can do this, but it is not always advantageous for you because you may find by the time you feel financially secure, your body has aged and having a baby may not be possible.

The best time to have a baby is a time when you and your partner are emotionally and spiritually ready to have, hold, nourish and comfort the dimpled body of a precious newborn baby. If you fill your heart with love and joy.
