6. Educate yourself.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that for most women, pregnancy comes with emotional bumps in the road. If you're like the majority of women, preparation and prevention are more than enough to get you through a few emotional episodes. Knowledge is half the battle.
But, when you're in the middle of a "moment" how do you keep it from escalating? The main reason they escalate as high as they do is a woman's discomfort over her lack of control. For example, she's frustrated that she cried over something insignificant, and that frustration spins out of control. A grown up temper tantrum can be spurred by something as innocent as crying over a friend's misfired joke. However, knowing that the tears were okay could have stopped the ordeal which followed.
Educate yourself about pregnancy in general. Less questions, less stress. Educate yourself specifically about the mood swings which accompany pregnancy. How? By reading pregnancy information, by asking questions at your prenatal visits, by talking to veteran moms.
Educate yourself about yourself. What makes you moody? What techniques help you cool down? Take the time to get to know your pregnant self. She might be a little different than the woman she was before.
Lastly, educate yourself about dealing with your emotions should they become more than you can handle. Ask those who know you best if your moods seem like healthy pregnancy related asides. If they are, relax and remember: sometimes laughter really is the best medicine. However, if after careful reflection, you're worried that you're more vulnerable emotionally than the majority of pregnant women, consult your doctor.
