What's a tired mom-to-be to do?

Welcome to the second trimester. Have you looked at yourself in the mirror today? Did you see that beautiful coloring in your face? That smile beaming back at you? You're not putting on a happy face. It's no put on! You're feeling good now. Most women report that the second trimester is a time of extreme well-being, both physically and emotionally. I truly hope you're one of those women and that right now you're feeling wonderful. You deserve it!

Don't you just love being pregnant? Despite any ailments you may have experienced thus far, this is one of the most exciting times of your life. No matter what else is going on, this is all about love. And what's not to love about love?

So, what are you up to these days? Baby's growing quickly inside you and you're growing, too. You're growing physically, though that may not be noticeable yet. Any day now...any day now. You're growing intellectually and emotionally, too. That's just as important as physical growth. You're preparing your life for the changes that come in a few short months.

You're a mom and you're doing what moms do. You're making plans. You're organizing. You're living in the moment, all the while dreaming of the future.

You're busy bonding with your pre-born baby. You've got a tremendous advantage that mothers in previous generations didn't have. (Okay, you've got quite a few advantages that mothers of yesteryear didn't have.)

A profound thing has just happened for you - you've recently heard baby's heartbeat and seen baby's image on ultrasound. For you, baby is more present in your reality because you have these visuals and sounds. Your baby is not a concept, your baby is a living, moving being - you've seen the evidence for yourself.

This gift of technology is very helpful in the mother-baby bonding process. Sure, mothers without technology bond with their babies. But you've got pictures. They're on the refrigerator door.

And you've heard that steady little drumbeat of a new heart. You're experiencing things women in the past couldn't have imagined.

The energy that some moms feel this trimester is truly amazing. You may feel the urge to start getting your home ready for baby, though it's not necessary to do so yet. You may even be thinking that your family plan timeline should be accelerated, and actually start planning your next pregnancy right now because you're feeling inspired.

Don't go overboard and make any decisions you'll have to live with or/promises you'll be expected to keep. Lime green wallpaper in the nursery? A grand announcement to begin working on the next baby as soon as you can? Remember that despite your increased drive, you have a lot more pregnancy to go. Use that energy to have fun. Enjoying yourself is one of the best ways to pass the time while waiting for baby's debut.

If You Want It, Eat Up.
Now that you're interested in eating again, you may begin to experience food cravings. Cravings are a pregnancy reality that many people don't fully understand until they live through them.

You know the stereotypes. They show a weary-looking man heading out to buy pickles and ice cream for his pregnant wife at midnight. He returns and she immediately sends him out for something else she desperately NEEDS. The pickles and ice cream were just a passing fancy. This is funny to people who aren't pregnant, or running errands for someone who is.

Pregnancy food cravings aren't whimsical or even predictable. You may crave odd combinations of things, like pizza smeared with grape jelly. You may desperately desire foods you've always detested, like liver and onions. Vegetarians may suddenly develop a love of - a need for - meat. Granola lovers may become potato chip fans. Many nutritionists tell you that your body is sending signals about a particular nutrient it requires. For some expecting mothers, this can be true.

But what about a woman who craves butterscotch pudding? Or a single Hershey kiss after her morning oatmeal every morning? What could her body be telling her? Maybe cravings like these are more about comfort than about nutrition. Maybe these are moms in need of some comfort. Foods that a woman associates with happiness or nurturing may be very desirable as she nurtures another human being.

There's no accounting for taste when you're pregnant. If what you crave is healthy, give in to your cravings - as long as you eat a balanced diet and don't overdo the indulgences.
