Pregnancy Food Cravings

Once your morning sickness has passed, you will probably find yourself hungry and wanting to eat. Food cravings are a normal, and sometimes humorous, aspect of pregnancy.

Helpful Tip:
To satisfy your cravings, you should keep your refrigerator packed with a large selection of foods, so you can eat when you feel like it. Make sure your fridge is always stocked with healthy fruits and vegetables!

In fact, around 50 percent of all pregnant women experience food cravings. Some women crave sweet and salty foods, while others crave spicy and fatty foods.

Why all the cravings? Researchers can't pinpoint one reason why women experience food cravings. Some experts believe that food cravings can sometimes signal nutritional deficiencies – so if your body is lacking in certain nutrients, you will start to crave foods that provide them.

Many vegetarians are surprised when they start having strong cravings for steak and meat during pregnancy. This is often a sign that their bodies are lacking the iron and protein that is in the meat. If you start to experience chocolate cravings, this can sometimes be a sign that you need more B vitamins in your diet.

Pregnancy food cravings can be incredibly overpowering.

Fun Fact:
You only need to add 300 extra calories during pregnancy. These 300 calories can be easily added to your diet with a snack or two throughout the day. (If you are expecting twins, you may need to add 600 extra calories).

While scientists haven't yet established why cravings are so strong among pregnant women, they certainly acknowledge that food cravings during pregnancy are the norm rather than the exception to the rule.

Don't be shy about your food combinations, even if your partner teases you!

Pregnant women are known for their strange food cravings. If you want to eat pickles and ice cream, please do! Just make sure that you use moderation and don't overindulge in one area and neglect the rest of your diet.

Eating a balanced diet is one of the best things that you can do for your developing baby. It's perfectly normal to give into your good cravings – just make sure that you balance it with fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods.
