<w:LsdException Locked="false" Priority="39" QFormat="true" Name="TOC Heading" /> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--> Early Maternal Hemorrhage

Vaginal bleeding early on in your pregnancy can alarm you. You may have just discovered you were pregnant and you’ve been overwhelmed with excitement and joy. Now you are bleeding. What does this mean? Have I lost my baby?

Bleeding early in pregnancy can be serious, but other times, it is not. Please contact your physician if you have bleeding of any kind.

Fact: Up to 40 percent of all pregnant women experience bleeding in the first trimester.

Early pregnancy bleeding can be caused by a number of factors, including implantation bleeding, a threatened miscarriage, vanishing twin, vaginal infections, genital warts, swollen labia, cervical polyp, uterine fibroid, and sexual intercourse.

Implantation

Around the time that may be expecting your period, you may experience some implantation bleeding—blood that results from the fertilized egg attaching to the lining of your uterus. Because of the timing, you may confuse this with your menstrual blood, which is heavier in blood flow.

When in doubt, a trip to your doctor’s office will confirm you are pregnant.

Threatened Miscarriage

Bleeding is a common sign that a miscarriage may occur. Your physician will diagnose you with a threatened miscarriage if you have vaginal bleeding accompanied with mild cramping, but an ultrasound exam shows that the baby is still moving and has a heartbeat.

Fact: Threatened miscarriages are typically seen at 7 to 11 weeks. Over 90 percent of the time, the pregnancy continues without any other problems.

If you have a threatened miscarriage, you may have a few spots of bright red blood, followed by brown, coffee-ground looking material. To reduce your discomfort, your doctor may recommend you avoid having sex and get extra rest. Be warned—these measures have not been proven to prevent miscarriage.

If you experience heavy bleeding and think you have passed fetal tissue, place it in a clean container and take it to your physician. He or she will do a pelvic exam to see if your cervix has opened and if a miscarriage has occurred.

Vanishing Twin

We discussed this in Week 7’s Newsletter. The term “vanishing twin” is used to describe a pregnancy that started out with two babies, but one of the babies has died early in you pregnancy. You may experience some spotting (light bleeding) and cramping with this phenomenon.

In most cases, the remaining baby is fine and the pregnancy will continue as normal.

Vaginal Infections

Vaginal infections are very common during pregnancy. These infections can make your vaginal tissue swollen and inflamed, causing it to be very delicate and bleed easily after a wipe or sexual intercourse.

All vaginal infections, including your common yeast infection, need to be treated. Once the infection is treated, the bleeding should disappear.

Genital Warts

Genital warts tend to increase in size and number during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy, you may have noticed a few small bumps on the outside of the vagina. During your pregnancy, these will grow quite large and bleed easily. You may be concerned about the bleeding if you don’t recognize that it is coming from the warts.

Warts can be treated during pregnancy, and the irritation and bleeding associated with them will be minimized.

Swollen Labia

Your vagina and the labia swell during pregnancy. Even the smallest amount of trauma to this area can cause it to bleed. Most often, this type of bleeding occurs from blunt trauma, such as riding a bike, or during normal sexual intercourse. Scratching can also cause your labia to bleed.

Blood from your swollen labia will not harm your baby.

Cervical Polyp

A cervical polyp can cause bleeding during your pregnancy. These polyps are fingerlike growths within or near the surface of your cervix. During pregnancy, these polyps can enlarge and cause bleeding during sex.

Although cervical polyps will not harm your baby, your physician may take a tissue sample from it to ensure that it is not cancerous.

Uterine Fibroid

Uterine fibroids, which are non-cancerous tumors that grow on the wall of your uterus, can cause bleeding during pregnancy.

If you experience mild bleeding but no cramping from the fibroids, you will need to be observed by a doctor but no additional treatment is required. In this case, the risk to your baby is very minimal. The blood you may see is light and brownish in color, like old coffee grounds.

If your fibroids are large, or if your baby is implanted close to the tumor, you may have a slightly increased chance of miscarriage.

Sexual Intercourse

Some pregnant women complain that they experience vaginal bleeding after sex, and they are worried that the blood is coming from the baby. Don’t be alarmed if you experience this—the blood is actually coming from your cervix (the opening to the womb).

During pregnancy, the surface of the cervix tends to bleed easily when touched. So you can experience light bleeding after sex, but this vaginal bleeding will not harm your baby. You may continue to have sex safely unless the bleeding bothers you.

I have been experiencing spoting during my 3rd to 4th weeks of my pregnancy inwhich lasted about 4 days. I consulted a doctor, who with out doing any examination or test told me flat out with out being sensitive that I may have miscarried. Yet this is the same doctor who kept telling me I wasn't pregnant inwhich in deed I was. I felt it right away. I just really need to know if this is normal or something I should be really concerned with. Unfortunately with my insurance I don't have a great selection in health care providers in my area. But I would like to find some sort of piece of mind that my baby is ok. Can any one else relate to this? Is there any doctor that can help me out?

What do pregnant women crave? We took a survey of BabyCenter users and discovered that most (almost 40 percent) said "Give me something sweet." Slightly fewer (33 percent) opt for salty snacks. Fans of Mexican food and other spicy cuisine came in third (17 percent). Trailing behind (at 10 percent) are those who crave citrus fruit, green apples, and other lip-puckering tart or sour foods.

I wanted to share my personal story of pregnancy success as my DH and I are ecstatic and we believe completely that a product called Instead Softcup is responsible for our success. I know how many women are struggling with getting pregnant, and if I can offer any hope or ideas of things to try, I just want to put it out there. We are currently pregnant with our second child, due in November. Back in 2004, DH and I had been spoiled when we conceived on the first try (read: Honeymoon) with our now 4 year old DD. When we started trying for #2, I think we subconsciously thought - "oh this will be easy." Well, fast forward nearly 6 months and no positive pregnancy test. We are talking ovulation monitoring, EVERYTHING. Granted, I am now 35 and obviously our lives are a bit more stressful with work, having a toddler, etc. But still, it was becoming frustrating, especially feeling that we were doing everything we could do to "time" things right. Also, we knew in our heads that 5 months wasn't THAT long a time to try, but as I mentioned, we were eager, and our past experience made us impatient. We were truly becoming burnt out when a friend of mine mentioned that she was working with a company who had a product that had been getting a reputation on blogs and fertility message boards for helping women to conceive. Of course, having serious baby on the brain and desperate to try anything, I went home and Googled it and low and behold, many, many stories on other blogs from women who had had success conceiving with the help of the Instead Softcup.

My friend gave me some samples so we thought, what do we have to lose? The next ovulation period, immediately after BD-ing, (meaning I had it on the nightstand ready and inserted it right away), we used Softcup. We used it twice that month and two weeks later, got the wonderful POSITIVE pregnancy test we have been waiting for! Again, I just wanted to share our success in the hopes that it can help other couples struggling to get that positive test themselves. I was lucky to have a friend turn me on to Softcups, but I have found out that they can be purchased at many drug stores, Wal Mart, and online at http://www.softcup.com, but I just heard that Target may not be carrying them anymore which is VERY disappointing as I know that they would be of value to SO many women- anyways, they are in the feminine products section, because their intended use is an alternative to tampons (which by the way they are great for too!). Don't be deterred by what they look like (literally like a bendable soft cup), as they are easy to use, VERY comfortable and most importantly SAFE (I have researched and gotten inside info from my friend who has insider knowledge because of the work arrangement).

What's your TTC success story? Please share!

Physicians calculate the pregnancy by weeks. We start from the last menstrual peroid, not the day of conception. So we start counting two weeks before you are actually pregnant. That is on the day of conception she is considered two weeks pregnant. She is right, the dating of pregnancy is "weird". Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble understanding what my girlfriend is explaining to me. Today (3/21) she found out from her doctor that she is 9 weeks pregnant (which dates back to 2/17), but that the date of conception was 7 weeks ago (which dates 3/3). The reason I am asking for a clarification, is that I was away during the 2/17 time frame, but I was around during the 3/3 time frame. She tells me that the week number is done kind of weird. So what is the case? Thanks, Angelo

A sandwich is harmless right? Wrong! Prepared meats, such as those available at a deli counter, including hot dogs or turkey, beef and chicken preparations, should not be consumed unless you re-heat them until steaming. Why?

These preparations may be contaminated with a substance called Listeria. These bacteria can harm your baby severely, and may even cause miscarriage or result in a stillborn delivery. Listeria is nothing to joke about, thus it is vital that you avoid the deli counter while pregnant

While a small amount of caffeine (1 small cup a day) may provide a much needed lift for pregnant moms, in general caffeine should be avoided during pregnancy. High amounts of caffeine consumption have been linked with birth defects and increased risks of miscarriage.
Remember that caffeine is present in many every day food items including chocolate, tea and soda. To play it safe you should avoid caffeine entirely during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to reduce the likelihood of miscarriage. Daily caffeine intake of more than four to seven cups of coffee a day appears to double the risk of spontaneous miscarriage.

Yasmin is a great birthcontrol pill and I prescribed it offen. Now the first few months of takening it can give you headaches, nausea, breast tenderness and bloating. It also can decrease the duration of menses. All of the normal side effects of Yasmin can mimic early pregnancy. Alll of your complaints I have heard many times from first time users that were not pregnant.

If you are concerned take a pregnancy test. The test will be accurate about 14 days after ovulation or around your period time if you have normal 28 day cycles.

Now do not stop your pill unless you have a positive test. I have seen so many young women think they are pregnant and stop the pill, only to get pregnant that month.

Hello,

I am 18years old. I have been in a committed relationship ship for over a year in a half with an AMAZING boyfriend who is turning 19 this November. Starting the past January, I started for the first time ever Yasmin. I have never missed a day, but i haven't been taking the pill at the same time everyday. Example i try and take it before school sometimes i forget and take it at 6pm etc. Starting since end of February he has been ejaculating inside of me. I had my last period March 25Th and it lasted one night and 2 days. My period is usually 3 nights and 4 days. and is ALWAYS regular. And the last period was on time. I have had frequent headaches, i have NEVER had a nose bleed before and i had my first one the past Thursday. It's never happened before. I'm am tired alot more often i could sleep a full 8 hours and still feel it isn't enough. My breast aren't tender but my nipples do look a little bigger but no color change. When i eat sometimes i feel nauseous after eating my favorite foods and have been craving peanut butter ? I have had cramps like period cramps, but no blood. And I sometimes get discomfort in my ovaries or at least in that area. And I've had dreams of people being pregnant and including my self, and my boyfriend rubbing my belly. I rarely get dreams, and I've been getting them every night for the past week or so. I don't know if I'm over reacting or maybe just feeling a little off. I just would like some input & if i should wait until my next period to see if its late or go to the doctors now, because if i am pregnant I'm not sure if the birth control will harm the baby ? My boyfriend and I discussed what we would do if i was pregnant a while back when we first started dating. This is my first time of me wondering if I'm pregnant. He doesn't believe in abortion or adoption and he would support me and the baby so i feel secure.

Thank You so much for taking the time to listen.

-Cara
