Are Unusual Dreams Normal During Pregnancy? Are Unusual Dreams Normal During Pregnancy?

The most unusual dreams I have ever had have been during my pregnancies. Not only are dreams unusual during pregnancy, they are also often more vivid and realistic than dreams during other times of our lives.

If you have unusual, vivid or strange dreams during pregnancy, don’t worry… you are not alone. Most women have vivid dreams during pregnancy. This is due to shifting hormone levels, combined with increasing anxiety and mixed emotions and feelings surrounding your pregnancy, your body and your baby.

Meaning of Dreams During Pregnancy
Your dreams may vary from complete random during pregnancy to meaningful. Many women have predictable dreams that involve the changes occurring in their body. Still others have dreams about their newborn baby or about going on journey’s. You may interpret many of these dreams as symbolic.

Many women dream about their baby’s arrival. It is quite normal for pregnant women who are anxious about their baby to dream they have lost their baby or are looking for their child. Don’t let such dreams alarm you. Take it as a sign you may be feeling some unexpressed anxiety about your ability to parent. Simply relax and remind yourself that women and men have had babies for centuries. While you may have worries about becoming a good parents, chances are parenting will come naturally to you once your little bundle of joy makes his or her arrival into this world.

Other women have dreams of what their life was like before pregnant. Many women have dreams like this toward the end of pregnancy, as they anxiously await to regain their body despite their increasing joy and elation at having a baby.

Still other women have dreams about going into labor. These are perhaps, some of the more common dreams women have. Many dream they deliver their own babies. Still others dream they have their baby, but something is wrong with them. This may simply also be a sign of your anxiety about you pending arrival.

If you do have worrisome dreams, take some time to revisit your dream on waking. Go back and change the course of events in your dream. Let’s say for example, you dream you deliver your baby, but something is wrong with the baby. When you wake, lie in bed for a moment and revisualize your dream. Only this time, picture yourself delivering a perfectly happy, healthy baby.

Chances are this tiny visualization will not only help reduce your anxiety, but will provoke more positive and relaxing dreams about you and your baby in the future. When it comes to labor and delivery, we often create our reality. The less anxious we are about labor and delivery, the more likely things are to go well… whether in our dreams or in real life.

Do Women Have Different Dreams Each Trimester?
Many women have varying dreams during each trimester of their pregnancy. This is normal and often associated with hormone levels as well as your thoughts, fears and concerns at each stage of pregnancy. During your first trimester for example, you may be overly concerned about a miscarriage, and this sentiment may be reflected in your dreams.

During your third trimester, your thoughts may be consumed with labor and delivery. Some women even find their partners have unusual dreams during pregnancy! My husband often tells me he gains sympathy weight and has many other sympathy pregnancy side effects, including unusual dreams, during my pregnancies!
