Baby Play Yard Buying Advice

If you are looking for a safe and convenient place to set your little one down to play, why not consider a play yard? A play yard (or playpen for old fashioned folk) is simply a rectangular or square area with mesh siding that often double as a bassinet. They are a great choice for parents who want to provide their babies with a safe and secure area to explore without having to worry about them wandering off.

Playpens are typically affordable and portable. Many people use them on trips as a replacement for a traditional crib.

Features To Look For When Buying A Play Yard

There are several features unique to the play yard. Here are some things to keep an eye out for when shopping:
  • Fold: make sure the play yard you buy folds up well, but also locks securely into place so your baby is safe when playing inside.

  • Wheels: look for a model with wheels, which make transport even easier.

  • Canopy: this is a nice feature, usually an add on that some manufacturers provide to protect your baby from the sun during warm summer months.

  • Detachable mobile: like the canopy, the mobile is a nice accessory that provides your baby with added entertainment when 'hanging out' in the play yard.

  • Mesh sides and removable sheets: look for a product that you can easily clean. Those with mesh sides and a mattress pad with removable sheets are more often than not the easiest to clean.

Safety Suggestions for Play Yards

Remember you should never leave your baby unattended while playing even in the play yard. Here are some other tips to keep your baby safe all year around:
  • Be sure there are no sharp edges on the play yard.

  • Avoid placing any padded objects of stackable toys your baby might use to climb out of the play yard on.

  • Avoid placing loose bedding in the play yard, which might pose a suffocation hazard for young babies.

  • Check to make sure the mesh fabric remains intact and free of tears or excessive wear.

  • Remember that loose or hanging strings might pose a suffocation hazard, so keep a vigilant watch on your baby if playing near any such hazard.

  • If you opt for a wooden play yard, be sure the slate are no more than 2 to 3/8 inches apart so your baby can't slip out or become trapped.

As with any entertainer or infant device, remember a play yard is not a suitable substitute for the watchful eye of a loving parent. Always be within arms reach when your baby is using any toy or play area to ensure their safety and well-being.

Don't forget when buying a play yard to fill out and send in your product registration card so the manufacturer can notify you if they need to recall a product! Last but not least, happy playing! There is a wide selection of fun and entertaining play yards in every color, style and fabric imaginable. You will find one that meets your individual wants, needs and preferences!
