Baby High Chair Buying Advice

Buying Guide for Baby High Chairs

A baby high chair is another must have item that is high on many parents'priority lists. When shopping for a high chair it is important that you find one that is functional, durable and affordable.

Styles of High Chairs

There are several different styles you can choose from when selecting a high chair:

  • Wooden High Chairs

  • Metal High Chairs

  • Full Feature High Chairs

Wooden high chairs are quaint but traditionally more difficult to clean that other varieties. They also tend to stain and do not fold. Thus, some parents consider them more bulky. They are however inexpensive, thus a good option for parents looking to save a few dollars.

Metal high chairs usually fold or collapse, making them easy to store and clean. They are a little heavier than some full feature high chairs, but often lighter than wooden ones.

Full feature high chairs are usually the most convenient and highly demanded by parents. Many have adjustable seat heights and removable padded seats that are easy to clean. Some come with removable trays and others come with wheels, which make them easy to move around the dining area or kitchen. Like metal high chairs they are typically more lightweight than wooden high chairs and fold up for easy storage.

Things to Look For When Buying A High Chair

So what should you look for when buying a high chair? The most important feature you should look for is durability and stability. You don't want your child tipping over while sitting in the high chair. Sturdy and safe high chairs will come with a wide base.
  • Three or five point harness system to secure your baby in the chair and prevent them from standing up or slipping out of the highchair.

  • Rounded edges to prevent injury.

  • Smooth surface – this is important if you plan on buying a wooden high chair. No baby likes to get splinters!
  • Tray with high sides to prevent spills from leaking to the floor

  • Easy clean features. Most babies love to make a royal mess when eating. The easier your high chair is to clean the more enjoyable your baby's mealtimes will prove!

  • Wheels that allow you to easily move the chair from one room to another. (If you do buy a chair with wheels, be sure to lock them when your baby is eating to prevent an unnecessary injury).

Safety Considerations when Buying a High Chair

As with any baby product you should take certain precautions to safeguard your baby against harm when using. When it comes to high chairs, the most important thing you can do for your baby is buckle up. Never let your baby eat in the high chair without first belting them in to protect them from falling.
  • Always be within eyesight of your baby when he is eating. Never leave your baby alone in the room while he is in the high chair.

  • Lock the wheels on the chair when your baby is eating.

  • Be sure you only use the high chair while your baby meets the minimum and maximum weight requirements. Once your baby outgrows their high chair you can move on to a booster seat.

Don't forget to send that product registration card in when you buy a high chair so you are notified in the event of a recall.

Remember that our baby will be spending endless hours playing and eating in his high chair. Take some time to pick a chair that you and your baby can enjoy during mealtimes if at all possible. You'll find in the long run it is well worth the effort!
