Congratulations! By the time you reach pregnancy week 37 if you were to deliver your baby, chances are he or she would be perfectly healthy! Most pregnancies last from 37 weeks to 42 weeks (although many doctors will induce a pregnancy that is 41 weeks along or thereabouts. Sometimes as you pass 40 weeks pregnant the placenta stops providing essential nutrients to your baby and it is healthier for your doctor to attempt to stimulate labor than not.

If your baby shows signs of distress for example, or you become ill, your doctor may want you to deliver your baby by induction if you don't go into labor on your own sometime between 37 weeks pregnant or around 41 weeks pregnant.

How Does Your Baby Present?
No two babies are alike. While most babies will flip into a position by the time you reach 37 weeks pregnancy so their head nestles into your pelvis, this isn't always the case. Some babies lie in a breech position, where their bottoms rest where their head should.

Often babies will turn themselves right side down by pregnancy week 40. If this does not happen your doctor may recommend a cesarean section. While it is not impossible to deliver a breech baby vaginally, it can be more dangerous for baby and mother. Other positions that necessitate a C-section include a transverse lie, where the baby lies sideways instead of head down.

Sometimes doctors will try to turn the baby or encourage it to move in a head down position, but this doesn't always work. Occasionally there is a reason for the baby being in an unusual position. For example, the cord may be wrapped around the baby's neck in a way that prevents a normal delivery.

If your baby continues to lie in a breech or side-lying position following pregnancy week 37, because there is less room in the uterus, there is less chance the baby will flip to a head down position.

If you have concerns about your baby's position, be sure you talk to your doctor about them and understand all of the procedures your doctor will entertain to ensure a happy and safe delivery for you and your baby. Most of the time however, by the time you reach pregnancy week 37 or pregnancy week 38, your baby makes the shift to a head down position. This places pressure on the cervix, which often stimulates softening and ripening of the cervix, so it will slowly open and allow for delivery.
