For most women sex during pregnancy is perfectly safe. If you have a normal pregnancy chances are your doctor will give you the go ahead. Many couples continue having intercourse right up until the time they deliver. You will however as you get larger probably find you need to change positions so you are comfortable while making love to your partner. If you have any questions or concerns about sex during pregnancy you should talk with your healthcare provider. Some women, including those with a history or miscarriage or women in high risk pregnancies may need to abstain from intercourse for a time or for the duration of their pregnancy. If this is the case fortunately there are many ways to be intimate without engaging in intercourse. Intimacy is vital in pregnancy and will help you and your partner remain close throughout your pregnancy.
Will My Partner Hurt the Baby?
Contrary to popular belief, your partner will not hurt the baby during sex. Your partner cannot 'bang' into the baby's head. This is probably an old wives' tale. You may however experience some stronger than average contractions of your uterus during orgasm. This should not be painful. The uterus normally contracts during orgasm. In fact the uterus contracts several times a day in response to various activities, even exercise. During pregnancy you are more aware of this sensation as your uterus expands. You may feel a brief tightening in your abdomen after climax. Sit back and relax for a bit. Getting up too quickly may result in round ligament pain.
Can Sex Induce Labor?
Toward the end of the third trimester sex may help promote cervical ripening. Intercourse itself is not likely to induce labor. However, semen does contain prostaglandin, tiny chemicals that can help ripen and prepare the cervix for labor. Contractions of the uterus during climax can also help stimulate or strengthen labor. Most couples enjoy helping the process along by engaging in intercourse frequently during this time. Of course, there are always stories of couples that were intimate and had the baby just a few hours later. While this is likely more coincidence than an actual cause and effect relationship, it can still be fun trying.
