So you are having a baby and now you need to pick out baby names. Congratulations! You have discovered one of the most challenging tasks facing new parents. You’ll find that throughout your pregnancy your friends, family members, casual acquaintances, co-workers and more all come up with their list of ‘top 100 baby names’ for your baby. Most pregnant women start rolling their eyes toward the end of pregnancy after hearing their baby should be named after “so and so’s mother” or your best friends cat or whomever. What you do need to do though is start discussing baby names early on with your partner. If you are finding out the sex of your baby selecting a name is easy. If you are not finding out the name of your baby you will have to go through a list of baby girls names and baby boys names to determine what names you like for each. Either way get out a pen and paper and be prepared for a little work.
Top Strategies For Selecting Baby Names
The key to good baby name selection is picking a name that you and your partner like rather than a name selected merely to appease friends for family. Here are some tips and strategies for selecting good vs. bad names for your baby. 1. Pick a name that sounds pleasing and compatible. Say your baby’s name out loud several times. Does it sound pleasing? Does the name rhyme too much? Does the name appear overly harsh? Is the name one that is easily made fun of (you don’t want to cause your unborn child unnecessary embarrassment after all). Try not to pick a first and last name that rhyme together. Take the name “Carter I. Barter”. That doesn’t look or sound good. 2. Avoid combining words that make up infamous sayings. You also want to avoid naming your child after someone else. Don’t for example necessarily name your little girl “Annie Oakley” unless you want her to have a famous name. 3. Select names that are unique and have meaning when possible. Sometimes a unique name helps your child meet new people later in life. Many children appreciate having a name that is connected with a significant meaning. We named our first child “Hannah” and one of the meanings for that name was gift from God. We believed Hannah was our gift from God after my husband’s mother passed away that year from cancer. 4. Try to avoid naming your children after close relatives. While you can select from a good pool of names doing this, you may create jealously in the family. 5. Don’t let family pressure you into a name you don’t like. Ultimately your child will be stuck with that name forever. 6. Consider a name after your heritage. You may want to name your children after certain relatives or based on your cultural or ethnic heritage. You may consider combining such a name with a more traditional name for the middle name. 7. Consider your child’s initials. Children are often merciless when it comes to teasing. If you name your child Frances Ann Thomas for example her initials will spell FAT. Keep this in mind when naming your child. At some point or another your child’s initials will be up for all to view and you don’t want to expose your precious child to unnecessary teasing. You and your partner should sit down to create a list of names you like. You can go through a book of little girl’s baby names or boys baby names and cross out names you don’t like. Then the two of you can decide between names that you do like, narrowing your choices down to one or two. I suggest having two names picked out so when your baby is born you have time to look at your baby and decide what name is fitting.
